Why Employee Expectations Matter in Global Capability Centers

Insights from ‘Daybreak Dialogues’ on why successful GCCs build alignment before they build scale.

As Global Capability Centers continue to expand in India, attracting top talent is only part of the equation. Increasingly, the focus is shifting to something less visible but equally important: aligning employee expectations with the realities of working in a global enterprise.

This emerged as one of the key topics of discussion during the inaugural Daybreak Dialogues, a GCC Leadership Roundtable Series held in Bengaluru on 9 July 2026, where GCC leaders explored the people and leadership challenges shaping the next phase of GCC growth.

Defining the Journey Before It Begins

One perspective came from Padma Srinivasan, GBS Leader, 7-Eleven Global Solution Center – India, who emphasized that “the end should be defined before the start.” Before hiring begins, organizations need clarity on where the GCC is headed, the culture they want to build, and the experience they intend to create for employees. That clarity builds confidence, transparency, and trust while helping employees understand the organization’s direction from the very beginning.

The discussion reinforced that hiring the right talent is only the first step. Long-term success depends on ensuring employees understand what working in a global enterprise entails and how their role contributes to the broader goals of the organization.

One Enterprise, Many Workplace Cultures

Professionals joining GCCs often bring expectations shaped by their previous workplace experiences. Conversations around compensation, incentives, work hours, leave policies, career progression, and workplace flexibility are natural. However, many of these expectations are influenced by local workplace norms, while global enterprises operate across diverse cultures, leadership styles, and employment practices.

The discussion highlighted that differences in expectations are not about one approach being better than another. Rather, they reflect the realities of operating as part of a global enterprise. Bridging these differences requires communication, transparency, and clarity from both leaders and employees.

Common Workplace Expectations  Typical Global Enterprise Practices
Compensation, annual hikes, and incentives are key discussion points. Role scope, business impact, and long-term career growth.
Clearly defined work hours and local workplace practices. Flexibility, collaboration across global teams, and business needs.
Career progression through promotions and designation changes. Growth through ownership, capability building, and expanded responsibilities.
Managers provide direction and make most decisions. Employees are encouraged to take ownership, make decisions, and solve problems proactively.
Success is measured by completing assigned tasks. Success is measured by business outcomes, collaboration, and enterprise impact.

While these expectations may vary across organizations, the discussion underscored the importance of helping employees understand that joining a GCC also means becoming part of a global organization with diverse ways of working. At the same time, enterprise leaders must appreciate the expectations that talent in India brings to the workplace.

Building Alignment Beyond Hiring

Ultimately, the employee expectation gap is not simply an HR challenge. It is a leadership challenge. Aligning expectations around ownership, accountability, collaboration, and performance helps employees integrate more effectively into the enterprise while strengthening trust on both sides.

As GCCs continue to compete for the best talent, success will depend on more than attracting skilled professionals. It will depend on aligning expectations from the very beginning, helping employees understand not just the role they are joining, but the global enterprise they are becoming part of.
